Colombia's Leader Declares 'I Shall Return to Arms Again' should US Intervenes Militarily.

Donald Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have turned up the volume in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions in their relations after US forces attacked Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has cocaine mills and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Talking to the press over the weekend, the American leader suggested similar military action against Bogotá, claiming the nation faces serious problems and “run by a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to America."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the illicit industry.

A Strained Alliance

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and received wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have worsened dramatically since Trump came to office.

Its drug trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups like the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Defiant Rebuttal

When asked whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good from my perspective."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle decades ago, firmly denied these allegations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture the president, which a significant portion of the population admires and supports, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member of the leftist M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he took part in drafting the nation's constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before winning the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I shall resume weapons once more," he said.

Increased Security and Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have sided with Trump's stance, but voices spanning the ideological divide have rejected the notion of American military action targeting Colombia.

Political and Economic Pressure

American authorities revoked his travel authorization subsequent to he called on American soldiers to ignore any illegal orders. Later, in October, it placed financial sanctions on Petro, the first lady and various close collaborators.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its troop levels in the region and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out strikes on boats in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
